Restaurants & Cafes

Begine Café Bistro Bar

Not only a café/bistro/bar, Begine is also a long-established women’s cultural centre of sorts with regular art and photo exhibits. A cozy spot to drop by for an after-work drink or bite to eat.

Café Berio

For more than half a century now, Café Berio has been a gay and lesbian institution in the heart of Berlin. Stylish and welcoming, Berio is great for dinner, drinks and weekend brunch.

Café November

After a hard Saturday night of partying, many of Berlin’s queers show up to the November Café for a late, leisurely brunch. Gay and lesbian footie fans also drop by when there’s a big game to watch on their big screen television. The outdoor terrace is another summertime bonus.

I visited this cafe regularly during my 10-day stay in Berlin in 2005. They offered wireless internet for 2 Euro and the desserts were amazing! I liked that it's marked very clearly on the entrance that it's "women-only" A lot of business-type lesbians were there for lunch. Friendly staff, too!

Fritz & Co.

It’s just a small stand (you’ll know it by the disco ball), but Fritz & Co. is known as Berlin’s first gay currywurst establishment. Currywurst may not be for everyone (imagine, if you will, a grilled hot dog sprinkled with curry powder and warm ketchup), but the Berliners eat it up!

Fritz & Co. is located on the northwest corner of Wittenbergplatz (Wittenberg Square), a large square in western Berlin at the end of Tauentzienstrasse. Unfortunately, they don’t even have a phone number.

Marietta

This totally cool spot could go in both the restaurant section and the Bars, Clubs & Nights section as it really is a bit of both.  During the daytime you can get a great coffee, snack or meal in this retro-style, gay and lesbian spot.  But when the sun sets, the space becomes more of a lounge.  Marietta is especially popular on Wednesday nights when there's a live DJ.

Melitta Sundström

Located in the same complex as the AHA LGBT centre (see "Information and Resources"), Melitta Sundström is a happening café that of course caters to the homo set. Great place for a coffee or snack, it’s also a bookshop with a wall of books in English, French and German, along with some gay tchotchke and postcards.

Neues Ufer Café

Die-hard David Bowie fans should absolutely stop by Neues Ufer during their stay in Berlin. Bowie lived right around the corner from this gay and lesbian café in the 1970s, and would often drop by for an afternoon breakfast or late-night drinks while recording his exceptional album, Heroes.

Schraders

You’ll find a little bit of everything at Schraders; tapas, finger foods, burgers, brunch and breakfast. The big draw in the summertime is, of course, their lovely outdoor beer garden.

Windows Café

With a name like this, you’d expect lots of windows… and you won’t be disappointed. Situated on a busy street corner, the huge windows offer a guilt-free opportunity to ogle the passing eye-candy while enjoying a nice, strong espresso. Popular with both gay boys and girls.
