Restaurants & Cafes
Baba Yega
Named after a Slavic witch (gotta love that), Baba Yega has been a favorite in the Montrose area since 1975. They’ve got a lot of things going for them: great patio for people watching, a good veggie menu along with lots of carnivorous favorites, and a very popular brunch.
2607 Grant St.
Houston
Baby Barnaby's
Located next door to Barnaby's Café (see below), Baby is where you go for breakfast and weekend brunch. They’ve got all the basic breakfast foods down, along with some Tex-Mex brekkie favorites including huevos rancheros and stuffed breakfast burritos. If it’s busy, sign your name on the pad of paper just inside the door to reserve your place in line. Then head outside to watch the ladies wandering by until your name is called.
602 Fairview St.
Houston
Barnaby's Café
There are now four locations of Barnaby’s Café, but we still go with the original. Hearty cheap eats, cheerful staff and a cute décor make this a queer favorite.
604 Fairview St.
Houston
Bocados
Popular Mexican restaurant that draws in the ladies most Wednesday nights for drinks and dancing after dinner. Sunday brunch is also popular.
1312 W. Alabama St.
Houston
Boom Boom Room
Admittedly, before coming across the Boom Boom Room I’d never heard of a “wine and panini bar”, but there you have it. This is a bit of an artsy/hipster spot on the weekends, with a hugely impressive wine list. This woman-owned and operated resto-lounge also has a “Gay Night” on Tuesdays, offering drink specials and munchies.
2518 Yale St.
Houston
House of Pies Restaurant and Bakery
Beyond loving the name of this place, I also love the hours…. They never close. You’ll find every type of pie your taste buds could want, along with general diner fare for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There are two locations, but this address seems to be preferred by the local LGBT community.
3112 Kirby Dr.
Houston
Java Java Café
Popular, artsy Heights neighbourhood hangout. You’ll find all of the traditional lunchy fare like sandwiches, soups and salads, along with Tex-Mex favorites and the Java Java Café original, the wafflelupa, a corn-bread waffle topped with beef and chili or chicken and black beans.
911 W. 11th St.
Houston
Kam's Fine Chinese Cuisine
Readers of OutSmart magazine (Houston’s monthly queer mag) chose this as their favorite Chinese restaurant in their 2006 Gayest & Greatest survey. Good Chinese food at fair prices.
4500 Montrose Blvd.
Houston
Mo Mong
Located right across the street from Chances bar, this is a great early evening spot for Vietnamese cuisine with a twist. Wednesdays are popular with both bent boys and girls for their martini specials.
1201 Westheimer Rd.
Houston
Onion Creek Café
Hipster spot in the beautiful Heights neighbourhood that calls itself a coffeehouse-bar-lounge. Very queer positive, they serve from breakfast to evening cocktails.
3106 White Oak Blvd.
Houston
The Rainbow Lodge
Woman-owned upscale eatery favored by the queer set (and all Houstonians). Now located in a fancy log cabin (if you can call it such), the Rainbow Lodge serves up hearty seafood, steaks, and wild game.
2011 Ella Blvd.
