Restaurants & Cafes

Ari Ya

This resto makes it into the list just because of the restaurant that used to be in the same space: Murakami.  In L.A., Murakami had long been referred to as “lesbian sushi” seeing as you could always count on finding a healthy dose of gay gals in the house.  Murakami reached iconic status when Bette and Alice mentioned the restaurant as the home of lesbian sushi in the L Word episode where Alice takes Phyllis out.  Unfortunately, the restaurant closed at pretty much the same time as when the episode aired, and so this new sushi restaurant has taken its place. The lesbians still visit, but not quite as much as they used to….though rumour has it that k.d. lang is a fan.

Cha Cha Cha

With a name like that you know the homos will check it out.  Cha Cha Cha serves up contemporary Caribbean cuisine, with lots of veggie options.  Sadly though, their West Hollywood location has now closed.

Ciudad

Popular, upscale South American restaurant with cuisine served up by out lesbian chef Susan Feniger. Feniger, of the "Two Hot Tamales" Food Network fame (with her business partner Mary Sue Milliken), has been wowing foodies for years with her original takes on traditional Latin cuisine, so expect a sophisticated and very mixed crowd.

Hamburger Mary’s

A WeHo institution, Hamburger Mary’s serves up hearty fare of burgers (nach!), pizzas, sandwiches and martinis (hey this is a gay restaurant!)  Sundays are officially ladies’ nights, but perhaps even more entertaining is Wednesday night bingo, hosted by a bevy of drag queens.

Kings Road Café

Named for the cross street where the café is located, Kings Road is most popular for weekend brunch, especially with the hipster girls.  But with popularity comes lineups, so don’t head here if you’re in a rush to get somewhere afterwards.

Lola’s

Lola’s prides itself on being the original creator of the Apple Martini, and really all of the martinis here are worth the visit.  The food is also quite good in this swanky space.  You’ll tend to find more lesbians showing up on Thursday nights if you’re considering dropping by for a meal or drink.

Mäni’s Bakery Café

Home to loads of delicious organic (often wheat-free and sometimes vegan) goodies (you know that alone is enough to draw in the lesbians). Mäni’s serves up popular breakfasts, lunches and dinners, along with delicious, yet wholesome, desserts.  Pick up bakery goods to go, or stay for a meal at the café.

Marix Tex Mex Cafe

A regular favorite for bent girls who enjoy guacamole, salsa and of course, margaritas.  Early Sunday evenings are especially popular, as is the patio.

Mark's

The quintessential homo resto in West Hollywood, Mark’s is popular for both dinner and drinks.  Once upon a time there was a regular Wednesday night dyke event, but no more.  All the same, you can still expect to see some ladies in the house.  If you want to enjoy the space without spending the big bucks, drop by on Mondays when the menu is half-price.

Murano

The latest venture from the Girlbar gals, but this time ‘round they’ve spread their wings to the food industry.  Murano serves a fusion of contemporary French and Italian cuisine in a super-sleek setting.  Weekend brunch is also served.

O-Bar Restaurant

Any place that has a Mojito menu has already made it to the top of my list!  O-Bar is a quintessential L.A. spot; part eatery, part bar, part lounge and lots of good lookin’ folk.

Psychobabble

Great name for a fun café, and what’s even greater for a traveller is the free wifi connection.  Popular with both bent boys and girls.

Street

Here is the latest offering from lesbian top-chef Susan Feniger, but this time she's opened a spot without her longtime business partner and instead launched it with her life partner.  The whole concept behind Street is to bring the best of street vendor food from around the world to the tables of Los Angeles, with most plates coming from Asia or South Asia.

Sweet Lady Jane Bakery

If you want to channel your inner Ellen and Portia, this is the place to do it!  Sweet Lady Jane baked the ladies their wedding cake when they got hitched in August, 2008.  But what's nice for us plebes is that they'll do it for you too, as long as you've got the cash!

Urth Caffé

If organic coffee and upscale teas are your thing, Urth is there for you.  They also serve small meals, with both veggie and vegan options.  There are three Urth Caffé locations, but to check out the queer girls you’d be best off visiting the original outlet in West Hollywood.
