Miami, USA

Introduction

Since the early 1990s, Miami, and especially the South Beach (SoBe) district of Miami, has been known as a total gay and lesbian travel destination with fabulous clubs, food and beaches.  Remember when Madonna owned a mansion here in the mid-90s, and would show up in the gossip mags dancing with dykon gal pals Sandra Bernhard and Ingrid Casares?  That certainly upped the ante for lesbian tourists back then, and though the city is still pretty amazing, it’s also become a lot straighter in recent years.  You know how it is… the queers make a place great, the straights move in because it’s so fabulous, and we move somewhere else.  This somewhere else is now Ft. Lauderdale, about 40 minutes away by car (yes, that same Ft. Lauderdale that was “spring break” central in the 1980s).

Generally speaking, Miami is the kind of place where you’ll enjoy the sunshine and oogle the Ocean Drive MTV-style debauchery as compared to living up the total lez lifestyle.  Of course gays and lesbians are very much part of the fabric in Miami, and there’s every chance that those two cute Latinas hanging at the Delano play for our team even if your dykedar isn’t beeping.  There’s a lot of gay/straight mixing that happens here.

That said, lesbians can still have a great time in Miami, especially if you’re in town for one of the city’s three (!) lesbian circuit parties: Aqua Girl, the Women’s White Party and the brand new Sweet Heat taking place for the first time in 2008.   Aqua Girl is especially huge with thousands of women from around the world hitting Miami for this long weekend of girl-centric bacchanalia, with all profits going to charity.  There’s also a healthy weekend lesbian party scene thanks to local dyke party promoters, but no full-time lesbian bar or club. One other note of interest... and perhaps another example of the lack of a strong full-time local queer community (seeing as most gays and lesbians are tourists there during the winter months) is the fact that there is no Gay Pride celebration in Miami.

Me and my new wife went on our honey moon to america and started the tour in miami expecting to openly celebrate our new life together. How wrong we was!!!! It felt like we were from mars and we got plenty of funny looks.A woman on the boardwalk nearly broke her neck running. Throughout the trip we found the majority of america's very rude but thankfully we ended our trip in fort lauderdale and found the gay area very relaxing.
