Events
Miami Recognition Award Ceremony
Late Nov, 2008 (TBA)
Extremely successful annual fundraising event for the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force recognizing (generally straight) “leaders who work to ensure lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights through the democratic process.” There are more gay men than women here, but this is still a total “power lesbian” event with ticket prices starting at $190
Women's White Party
Nov 26 - Dec 1, 2008
This massive circuit party is the biggest AIDS fundraiser in America. Thousands of queers descend upon Miami for this event, including tons of women. The ladies have become such an integral part of this celebration that there is now a whole slew of events and parties just for the girls. Women even have their own host hotel, right next door to the men's hotel.
Miami Women’s International Film and Arts Festival
Feb 6 - Feb 14, 2009
"A unique cultural event featuring films, visual and performance arts and other artistic expressions by women. The events bring together women from all over the world to explore, share and dialogue about issues concerning women through arts."
Winter Party Festival
Feb 25 - Mar 2, 2009
The Winter Party started out, and remains primarily, a boy’s circuit party event. But over the years more and more lesbians have taken part and they’ve now created a number of special events just for the ladies. To boot, this one’s for a good cause which benefits the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and Miami-Dade LGBT organizations.
Lavender Footlights Festival
Feb 28 - Mar 2, 2009
Oddly enough, this annual LGBT theatre festival is presented by a straight woman who is just a huge supporter of our community. Lavender Footlights is six nights of readings of plays from gay and lesbian authors. Arrive early for the cocktail hour beforehand.
Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival
Apr 24 - May 3, 2009
Keep your eyes peeled for the “Women at the Festival” presentations, the women’s programming segment of the festival.
Aqua Girl
May 6 - May 10, 2009
Not only do you get to party with a couple thousand women in bikinis, you also give back to the community. Aqua girl is the number one dyke charity event in America, and all profits to straight back into the Aqua Foundation for Women, a nonprofit organization that supports lesbian, bisexual and transgender women in South Florida.
Sweet Heat
May 7 - May 10, 2009
Whew, May sure is lesbian month down in Miami! There are three huge, multi-day lesbian bashes happening.... Sweet Heat, which calls itself Miami's Pride for Women (seeing as this takes place on week before Sizzle, South Florida's Black Pride celebrations) and AquaGirl, the long-running (and very successful) women's circuit party.
Sizzle Her
May 22 - May 25, 2009
Sizzle is South Florida's annual Black Pride celebration, which attracts mostly men. In 2008, the women decided to launch their own party, and Sizzle Her was born. Taking place over Memorial Day weekend, this could end up being quite the party as it's organized by the women behind the very successful Atlanta Women Pride celebrations.
Pridelines Youth Prom
Mid-June, 2009 (TBA
What a brilliant idea! Each year (this will be the 14th edition), Pridelines hosts a queer prom for youths aged 13-20. Exciting and original dress-up is encouraged, and nobody will look twice at the girl in a tux (which, I kid you not, I did wear to my prom... but it was a traditional straight prom and I was just considered a weirdo).
