Human Rights Campaign Greater New York Gala

This annual gala is one of the hottest queer social events of the year in NYC, honouring those who’ve made a difference to promoting the gay community (often celebs like Ang Lee or actors from Law and Order). Even though there are more men than women, this is a “power lesbian” event.
CineKink

True to its name, CineKink is a film festival all about the expression if kink on film. "Featuring a specially-selected program of films and videos that celebrate and explore a wide diversity of sexuality, with offerings drawn from both Hollywood and beyond, works presented at CineKink NYC range from documentary to drama, camp comedy to hot porn and everything in between." Many of the presentations have lesbian, trans or bi content.
BAAD! Ass Women Festival

Calling itself a "cultural festival celebrating fierce women's history month", this annual event hosted by the Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance (that's where the BAAD! would come in...) is a great opportunity to see some hot productions celebrating the empowerment of women. 2009 is the 9th edition of this cool fest.
Winter Heat

“Winter Heat is Empire State Pride Agenda’s annual winter party for women. Take the chill off a cold winter’s night with a sophisticated evening of socializing, dancing and cocktails.” Empire State Pride’s mission is “to win equality and justice for LGBT New Yorkers and our families.” This is considered one of the major New York lesbian society events of the year.
Women Centre Stage

“Culture Project's Women Center Stage is an annual, multidisciplinary festival featuring women artists whose work calls attention to human struggles globally. WCS gathers artists, activists, thinkers, and other crucial voices for justice - to build community and solidarity, share stories and ideas, and challenge one another to act and react.” 2008 participants included Eve Ensler, Lynn Redgrave, Ally Sheedy and many more.
Butch/Femme Society Annual Dance

The big event of the year for the NYC Butch/Femme Society.... think formal gowns and tuxes for those who go all out, but pretty much everybody dresses up for the occasion. You don't have to be a member of the Society to join in on the festivities. Order tickets directly through their website.
Triangle Awards
Late Apr, 2009 (TBA)
An annual LGBT publishing award, honoring the best in fiction, non-fiction and poetry. The Publishing Triangle, which presents these awards, does a lot for LGBT writing in general in the New York area.
GayFest
Mid-May, 2009
2007 was the inaugural year of this new LGBT festival of new plays and musicals. It’s a festival that believes in doing good, and donates a part of their profits to a scholarship for students at the Harvey Milk high school.
Queens Pride

No, this is not some funny gay play on words, Queens Pride is for the borough of Queens which has hosted its own pride parade celebrations since 1993.
NewFest: the New York LGBT Film Festival

Long Island Pride

Yup, even Long Island gets into the swing of things with their own pride festivities. They do a parade followed by a popular festival in the park afterwards.
Brooklyn Pride
Mid-June, 2009 (TBA)
One of the fun things about living around New York City is that you can celebrate Pride over and over again. Brooklyn holds their own day-long event in Park Slope with an evening parade and party usually a week or two before the big Manhattan pride. Since it’s in Dyke Slope, you can count on a fair amount of lesbians at this Pride celebration.
Coney Island Mermaid Parade

This really isn’t an official gay event in any way, shape or form, but so many homos, both men and women, would rather hit this parade than the official Pride parade which often takes place at the same time. The Coney Island Mermaid Parade is both the biggest art parade in America and a true local celebration with many New Yorkers dressing up as mermaids, Neptune or other sea creatures. It’s over-the-top camp followed by a post-parade ball with burlesque performances and other sideshow acts.

The New York festival of queer culture! This two-month bonanza offers up every type of queer art, from performance to music, theater, dance, literature, poetry, spoken word, puppetry, burlesque, drag, and circus.
Heritage of Pride (New York Pride)

NYC’s Black Pride celebrations. This four-day event is a true cultural festival with parties, a community awards ceremony, arts series, family day in the park and much more. Keep your eyes peeled for the dyke dance party.
Fresh Fruit Festival

An international LGBT cultural and arts festival held every year in Manhattan. Presenting “theater, performance, poetry, comedy, spoken word, music, dance, visual arts and some talents that defy categorization.” Performers come not only from North America, but from around the world.
Commercial Closet Association Images in Advertising Awards

2009 is the 5th edition of this excellent awards event highlighting some of the best commercial and advertising work that represents LGBT life.
New York City Femme Symposium

2007 was the inaugural Femme Symposium, and they’re expecting to be back again in 2009. “The symposium is an opportunity for self-identified femmes in the New York City metropolitan area to socialize and connect with other femmes. It provides femmes and our allies with space to discuss issues and topics of relevance, and is intended to increase the visibility of femmes.”
5 Boro Dance Challenge

The New York State same-sex dance competition. Competitions in all of the traditional dance types like tango, rhumba, fox trot etc.
The New York Burlesque Festival

A perpetual lesbian favorite, the 2007 festival was even partially sponsored by the local dyke mag, Go Magazine. Four days of pasties, fishnets and strip teasing delights.
The Reel Sisters of the Diaspora Film Festival and Lecture Series

Taking place in Brooklyn, New York, this festival’s aim is to “cultivate and spotlight the unique talent and struggle of women of color in the film industry. Our goal is to empower women filmmakers of African-American, Caribbean, Latina, Asian and African descent. Reel Sisters provides access to leading professionals through the presentation of panels and workshops on various topics from screenwriting to producing.”
