Provincetown, USA

Introduction

The first time I visited Provincetown (or P’town as locals and regular visitors like to call it) I felt like I was Alice in Wonderland. I’d fallen down the rabbit hole and found myself in a world upside-down, where gays and lesbians are the majority and straights the minority.  This is what lesbian travel is all about.

Located on the very tip of Cape Cod, this artists’ enclave is a homo haven (or heaven, depending upon how you look at it.) It’s really just a small beach town, centred around the main drag, Commercial Street. But until you’ve actually set foot in Provincetown in the summertime, it’s hard to imagine what this place is really like. Of course there are more gay boys than lesbians, but it’s still very mixed. The queers hold hands walking down the street, and the visiting straights barely bat an eye. Hey, they’re in our town, not the other way round!

Provicetown is a small place, so there's only a couple of lesbian bars, but that's really enough.  As to mealtime, honestly, there’s not one restaurant here where lesbians won’t feel comfortable and welcome.  That said, there’s not a whole lot of women-owned eateries in town, so you may want to encourage them with your business all the same.  These are the restaurants I've included in the "Restaurants" section.

The lesbians who visit Provincetown tend to be in the 30+ age bracket (with most probably in their 40s and 50s), probably because of the cost of visiting P’town. It’s not always cheap, and unless you’ve taken the ferry from Boston, you pretty much need a car to get there. Provincetown can be anything from party-central to zen and relaxed, it’s up to you to decide what you’re looking for. Since this is a "one main street" kinda place, driving around once you’ve arrived is pretty useless, which is why so many people ride bikes. Bring your own or rent from the myriad of bike rental operations.

P.S. Provincetown is located in Massachusetts, the only American state to legally recognize gay marriage.

Provincetown has the most beautiful beaches in the country and the only women's beach. Come during the women's events like Girl Splash, Women of Color Weekend, and Single Women's Weekend and ptown becomes a gay woman's mecca.

Ptown is a wonderful experience- everyone should go at least once if not more. It's an amazing feeling to walk around and not feel as if you are under constant scrutiny.

Ptown is a wonderful, contagious experience. I asked a server at a restaurant, "How do you feel about the straights in town?". The reply was "This is our town. If they don't like it, they can leave."
