James C. Hormel Gay and Lesbian Center (at the San Francisco Public Library)
It may officially be called a centre, but in reality this is the home of the largest collection of LGBT literature in the world. The centre is named for the donor who spearheaded the project, James C. Hormel, probably known best as the first openly gay U.S. ambassador (he was stationed in Luxembourg). Beyond the books, magazines, films, videos, manuscripts and more, the Centre also spearheads a number of regular exhibits.

Kabuki Springs
Located in the Japan Center, Kabuki Springs is a Japanese bathhouse offering dry sauna, steam room, cold pool, hot pool and of course massages. Kabuki Springs isn’t exclusively for women. However, it is women-only on Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays and with the closure of the women-only Osento spa in August, 2008, this is now your best option in town.

Pink Triangle Park
A civil rights park by Market and Castro streets is easy to spot with its 15 towering granite pylons, each inlaid with a pink triangle, to honour and commemorate the approximately 15,000 members of the LGBT community who died under the Nazi regime.
Purple Moon Dance Project
“The mission of Purple Moon Dance Project is to increase the visibility of lesbians and women of color and to encourage social change, peace and healing in our society through the medium of dance. Queer Cultural Centre
“QCC is a multidisciplinary arts presenting organization that conducts artistic and interpretive programs exploring queer identity issues.” From films to photo to performance art, there’s a lot of interesting work going on here. They also present the annual Queer Arts Festival every summer.

Queer Dance

Queer Food For Love
Where, oh where, should this listing go? Queer Food For Love offers so many things... an opportunity to dine on amazing cuisine, a social group that honors food as a community commodity, and a chance to meet queers of all colors. Queer Food For Love is a take-off of the Parisian group of the same name. It's a group of volunteer food afficianados who meet somewhat regularly and invite others to join them for a communal dinner.
Queer Jitterbugs
Almost every night of the week they have same-sex dances and classes in everything from the Jitterbug to the Lindy to Ballroom and Latin dancing. Newbies are always welcome and no partners are needed (they’ll find someone for you there!) Classes and parties are in different locations, so check their website for more details.
Queer Open Mic (2nd and 4th Fridays of the month at the 3 Dollar Cafe)
Performers sign up at 7:30 p.m. with readings beginning at 8 p.m. The rules are fairly simple: each performer can present one item that is five minutes or less. if there's is time and you wanna go again they sometimes have a second round.

Radar Productions
" RADAR Productions is a San Francisco-based non-profit that produces literary happenings around the Bay Area and beyond. Founded by queer writer and spoken word performer Michelle Tea, RADAR produces the monthly RADAR Reading Series at the San Francisco Public Library." Rainbow Women’s Chorus
The name pretty much says it all… this women’s only chorus has become a staple at SF events throughout the year.
Roxie New College Film Centre
This arthouse cinema is the oldest continuously operating cinema in San Francisco. Opened in 1909 (!), the Roxie shows more documentary films than any other movie theatre in the United States. They also present a ton of queer flicks, so check their website to see what's playing.

San Francisco Bay Queer Contra Dance
Even if you’ve never heard of Contra Dance, if you’re a fan of any kinds of same-sex dancing (well, maybe not raves), you’ll probably enjoy this. Contra is a mixture of English, Celtic and Quebecois dance traditions. Someone calls the steps and you just follow along. Introductory classes are always offered before the actual dances and (single) newbies are most welcome.
San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band
Billing itself as the first openly gay musical organization in the world, the band has regular performances, but also performs at a number of local and out-of-town events throughout the year. Check website for dates and details.
SF Games
It’s board games galore at this twice-weekly meet-up. Dozens of people participate, so arrive early to make sure you get into the game. Tourists are always welcome; SF Games has even been written about in Italian and German press. There’s no cost to participate, but buy a little something to eat or drink from the host café. Tuesday nights it’s cards and on Fridays it’s all games. Not necessarily an LGBT group, but tons of homos show up.

Stage Werx is a lovely, little woman-owned and operated theatre that opened in late 2007. Bomchikawowow is their production company, but you'll see all kinds of groups using this intimate space.

The Centre for Sex and Culture
“Our mission is to provide non-judgmental, sex-positive sexuality education and support to diverse populations by means of classes, workshops, social gatherings, cultural events, and practical skills-building events; to maintain and house these events and supporting materials and functions; to maintain a publicly-accessible library and archives.” Their events are held at a number of locations.
The New Conservatory Theatre Center

The Rhinocerous
Founded in August, 1977, the Rhino is the world's oldest continuously producing professional queer theater. The company came to national attention in 1984 when it presented The AIDS Show: Artists Involved with Death and Survival, the first play about AIDS staged in the United States. That same year, the theatre’s founder, Allan B. Estes, Jr., died from AIDS. Since then the theatre has strived to present interesting, entertaining and challenging works that represent our community.
