Restaurants & Cafes
Balkan Continental Restaurant
Family-run restaurant that’s been welcoming an LGBT clientele for more than 40 years. It’s Eastern-European inspired cuisine, so expect lots of meat. Consistent food and fair prices, and as an added bonus, it’s BYOB.
209 Oxford St.
Darlinghurst
Bar Italia
This little spot has been around forever. Basic Italian food at very affordable prices makes this a busy resto.
169 Norton St.
Leichhardt
Bar Via Veneto
An unassuming little Italian cafe that serves some of the best coffee in Dykehardt.
395 Parramatta Rd.
Leichhardt
Bistro Lulu
A little touch of Paris in the heart of sunny Sidney, Bistro Lulu offers typical French bistro fare with an excellent wine list. Some ladies drop by to the Lulu martini bar for cocktails at the end of their day.
257 Oxford St.
Paddington
Bistro Ortolan
Upscale French restaurant which is a bit of a surprise to find in Dykehardt, as it usually leans towards Italian restos. Hearty simple fare, but well done.
134 Marion St.
Leichhardt
Café Comity
One of the queerest of the queer venues on Oxford street. Great place to grab a coffee as you start your day.
139 Oxford St.
Darlinghurst
Coffee on the Loose
Brought to you by the same gals behind the LOTL magazine. Only open Mon-Fri, 9 :30 a.m. – 5 :30 p.m., but it’s still a lovely spot to stop for a coffee, snack or the latest lezzie info.
24A Rosebank St.
Darlinghurst
Grappa
One of the better Italian restaurants along the Norton St. strip. Salt-baked snapper is a constant favorite as are their wood-fired pizzas.
267-277 Norton St.
Leichhardt
Lure
An up-market fish and chips spot where you choose your seafood from a display cabinet, pay at the counter and wait for it to be delivered to your table.
381 Bourke St.
Darlinghurst
Succulent Things to Eat and Grow
It's a big name when you say the whole thing, but locals refer to it just as "Succulent" and it's easy to figure out why. Great coffee, all day breakfasts and other foodie treats make this lesbian-owned and operated cafe a popular spot with the girls.
534 King St.
Newtown
Suma Lee (at Bank Hotel)
If you’re already going to join all the girls at the Bank for their weekly Wednesday dyke night, you might as well start off the evening at the Bank’s Thai restaurant, Suma Lee. The food is pretty good, but it’s just nice knowing you’ll barely have to take a step to go from dinner to partying.
324 King St.
Newtown
Tropicana Caffe
A lovely place to drop by for a coffee, salad or sandwich. Especially enjoyable is the outdoor seating area where you can watch all the lovelies wandering by.
227 Victoria St.
Darlinghurst
Una’s Coffee Lounge
Hearty Swiss-German fare that keeps the regulars lined up out the door. There are now three Una’s restaurants, but it’s the one in Darlinghurst you should check out for their heaping plates of goulash, schnitzel and mushrooms.
340 Victoria St
Darlinghurst
Vamps (BYO) Bistro
As soon as the letters BYO (that would be “bring your own”, as in wine) show up at a restaurant, I’m always ready to take a look. But Vamps offers more than just that. It’s a tiny nook of a place offering tasty French bistro fare at fair prices in the pricey Paddington.
227 Glenmore Rd.
Paddington
Yipiyiyo
Slightly upscale Tex-Mex in a hopping environment. Good food and service and on Thursday nights, would you like some drag queens to go with that quesadilla? There’s different drag shows every Thursday, presented by Leave it to Diva Productions. A set price meal comes with the show.
290 Crown St.
Darlinghurst
