Toronto, Canada
Introduction
First things first, Toronto is a great city for lesbians. There’s a vibrant dyke culture, the hets are hip and the city itself is pretty cool. While there is a happening homo village, centred around Church and Wellesley streets, the gals have spread out over the years.
For many years Church and Wellesley was almost exclusively a gay boy domain, but in recent months things have really been looking up for the ladies. There are a few regular dyke nights that have launched on the weekends and there's two somewhat full-time lesbian spots. But that's not the only place you'll find the girls in T.O. Lesbian moms and their tots hang in Cabbagetown (around Parliament and Wellesley streets) and the veggie dykes in the Annex (Bathurst and Bloor). For the hipster grrrls, it’s the west end you’re after in neighbourhoods like Parkdale and Queen West, but to fully appreciate that neck of the woods you may want to consider putting aside a few extra bucks for the taxi rides.
Perhaps one of the greatest things about Toronto, or Canada in general, is the fact that you can just arrive and be married within a few hours. Foreigners can legally get hitched in the country, which makes it an ideal lesbian travel destination. Just bring all of your paperwork, about $100 for fees and you're done. My honey and I got married at Toronto’s city hall, and when we were applying for our license we had the sweetest, most charming Irish woman in her 60s serving us. When all was said and done, she got up, shook our hands and wished us years of happiness. The woman officiating our ceremony at City Hall was also a total doll. All these straight people made us so welcome, I can’t imagine a better wedding experience. If you’re thinking about popping the question while on vacation, just visit www.city.toronto.on.ca for marriage details and an application form that you can download.
