Restaurants & Cafes

Beaver Cafe

A lez name if I’ve ever heard of one, this west end hot spot is especially popular with the queer/electro punk crowd.  Food is the mainstay of this hip spot, but music and parties are catching up as a raison d’etre.  Great lunches/brunches and breakfasts, this is healthy diner fare with tons of organic product.  There’s also a great outdoor patio much enjoyed for the late nite cocktail.

Big Mamma's Boy

Lesbian-owned dinner/brunch spot that serves a number of organic and gluten-free dishes.  Great selection of pizzas also available.  Drop by on Tuesday night for their weekly homo stand-up event, "See You Next Tuesday".

Fressen

If we’re talking veggie cuisine, we can’t forget about Fressen, named on of the 14 hippest vegetarian eateries in North America by VegNews.  This is one of the more upscale and loungey type vegan/vegetarian restaurants you’ll ever encounter.  Much of their product is organic, including some of their wines.  Word of warning: everything here is cooked from scratch, so it can take a while for meals to arrive.  At least you can fill the rumbling tummies with an appetizer of whole-grain baguette spread with walnut-spinach pesto and black olive tapenade as you wait.

Get Real Cafe

Vegetarian and vegan lesbians looking for a great brunch spot will be oh, so very happy at the Get Real Café.  With organic egg omelets, crepes, waffles and even a vegan version of the traditional English breakfast this is a meatless wonderland.  Their lunch menu is equally tasty and all of their plates have wheat and dairy free options.  This is a teeny, tiny place, but it expands with an outdoor terrace during the summer months.

Hair of the Dog

Besides having such a great name, Hair of the Dog is also a great, laid back space for drinks (especially their martinis!) and slightly upscale bar food.  Every time I visit I’m always surprised by the number of lesbians who are also stopping by.  Located in the heart of the gay village, this is a great spot to start or end the evening.

JetFuel

My absolute favorite spot to grab a cup of java in Toronto.  They’ve got an excellent, strong latte at a fabulous price, but get ready for huge crowds on the weekend. JetFuel is popular with pretty much everybody in the neighbourhood, but you’ll often seen lesbian moms with their little ones or alternative grrlz hanging with their buddies.

Kalendar Koffee House

Located in the heart of Little Italy, this European style café/restaurant has built itself a nice reputation as a great spot for a casual meal.  Homos of all sorts drop by for a quiet coffee or yummy lunch.  Try to grab a patio seat during the summer months to do a little people watching.

Mitzi's Café

Named for the 1950's girlie pin-up queen Mitzi Gaynor, lesbian-owned Mitzi’s Café is hugely popular for weekend brunch with yummy hash browns, buttermilk pancakes and their to-die-for french toast. Mitzi’s is located in a colorful house front on a quiet residential street, so it’s a pretty tiny place with a charming outdoor patio for the summer months.  Expect line-ups and it’s cash only.

Mitzi's Sister

From the gang who brought us the delightful Mitzi’s Café, here’s Mitzi’s Sister.  Located just around the corner from the Café, big sis is a lot more rock’n roll.  This is a resto-bar/music spot housed in a former tavern that has different shows pretty much every night of the week.  Great cuisine and a very popular brunch.  The clientele is absolutely all over the map with families to electro-dyke couples.  Kids eat free on Wednesday nights.

River Restaurent

I like this restaurant not only because it offers good eats, but because it offers good eats for a  cause.  Most of the employees here are either homeless or at-risk youths.  This spot gives them an opportunity to get their lives back on track, while serving happy customers everything from eggs benedict to burgers, lamb and pasta.  There’s also a good number of vegetarian dishes offered and to boot, there’s a cool, loungey vibe to the place that makes it a nice place to relax.

The Green Room

True, this place may look like a bit of a dump from the outside, but once you walk through the door, you’ll see it’s worth a visit.  Students, artists and homos flock to the Green Room for coffee, drinks and their all day breakfast.  Strong veggie menu available.

My girlfriend and I had a wonderful lunch @ the green room. I would not have ventured into the place if I had not been guided there by girlports, because it looks pretty sketchy. Once inside though it was simultaneously gritty and fabulous. The food was tasty ( we shared the shrimp pad thai and a green salad), the drink selection great, and all was well priced. The neighborhood surrounding was also a great find with local shops, tatoo parlours, indy theatre, etc... We will be back.
