Lesbian and lesbian-positive chorus that does regular performances year-round. Check their website for dates and locations.
Black Parade Kings
Popular drag king group based in Vancouver. This gang is most definitely community oriented, hosting a monthly event at the local LGBT centre for young people under 25 who are interested in learning more about drag king culture and performance.
Bob Loblaw Queer Comedy Troupe
Vancouver’s gay stand-up comedy troupe. Mainly guy oriented, but the lesbians keep on laughing.
Co-op Radio (102.7 FM)
Vancouver's community radio station. Tune in Thursdays for the Coming Out Show from 7-8 p.m., followed by the Lesbian Show from 8-9 p.m.
DK United
A great Vancouver drag king troupe. They perform regularly around town, often at Lick. Check their website for dates and venues.
Do-it-yourself L Word tour
As I mentioned in the introduction, most of the L Word is actually shot in beautiful British Columbia, primarily in Vancouver. Many of the locales used in the show are familiar spots to Vancouverites, and here are just a few of them you might recognize too:
Dana fans (damn you Ilene Chaiken for getting rid of her!!) can honor our favorite tennis player’s memory at the Burnaby Hospital where she “passed away” or at the waterfall in North Vancouver where the girls did that lame-o homage to Dana. If season one Bette is more up your alley, the Elliot Lewis Gallery stood in for the California Arts Centre. Other places you may have seen with other names include the Odyssey Nightclub (one of the biggest gay bars in Vancouver), Lotus Sound Lounge, the Ironworks, Wild Rice restaurant, J.J. Bean Coffee (filling in for the Nirvana Bean) and the Orpheum Theatre which has hosted a number of Shane moments, including her Hugo Boss premiere.
Girl Gigs
True to its name, Girl Gigs presents (almost weekly) live music nights featuring female, and sometimes queer female, musicians in various venues around town.
Laff Riot Girls
Gang of girls doing the stand-up in venues around Vancouver, including regular Saturday night gigs. They may be straight, but they know how to get us giggling.
Leaping Thesbians Theatre Company
Great name, great project. The Leaping Thesbians are all about performance, specifically women's/lesbian theatre. They present original, lesbian-themed plays in various spots around the city. Check their website for upcoming shows.
Not So Strictly Ballroom
Where same-sex dancing is not queer! If you want to mambo, cha cha, tango, line dance, swing, quickstep, salsa and so much more, this is the place for you. Not So Strictly Ballroom offers classes for newbies and holds regular dance evenings for the LGBT community. Remember to wear soft-soled or suede bottomed shoes!
Queer FM (CITR 101.9 FM)
Another community radio show highlighting everything social and political in our queer world. From 6-8 p.m., every Sunday night.
Rainbow Concert Band
Presently Canada’s only LGBT concert band. They have numerous shows throughout the year, primarily in the Vancouver area.
Raving Theatre
Raving Theatre is a non-profit company committed to encouraging and developing new works by local gay and lesbian playwrights and supporting all aspects of live theatre including theatre, dance, music, video, film and performance art. Their shows are presented at different venues in Vancouver.
Screaming Weenie Productions
With a name like Screaming Weenie, you might imagine this would be a gay boy theatre troupe. Thankfully, you’d be wrong. Screaming Weenie is a non-profit queer performance group that presents all forms of bent theatre, with a lot (if not most) of it for the lesbian set.
Sounds and Furies
Innovative production company that presents concerts, workshops, retreats and special events throughout the year, and these are not your everyday kind of lesbian productions…. From stand-up comediennes to wicca seminars to film screenings. Sounds and Furies is also the team behind the Annual Women's Winter Faire, featuring the finest of British Columbia’s women artists and the Annual Westcoast Gathering and Conference of Lesbians 50 Years & Older (see events section for more on these two events.)
Stiletto's and Strap-ons Burlesque
"Our aim is to create high-quality productions that promote positive, safe and giddy expressions of sexuality. We are determined to transgress traditional gender roles, presentations, and assumptions, concurrently imparting our kinky-queer-femme-diva politics through the medium of progressive performance." Sweet Soul Burlesque
Super-cool burlesque troupe that co-produces the Vancouver International Burlesque Festival. They have tons of shows throughout the year and keep your eyes peeled for the Pride performance.
Terminal City Rollergirls
Vancouver’s female roller derby league!! Yaay roller derby! There are four teams in the Rollergirls league: Bad Reputations, Faster Pussycats, Girls From Bad Homes and the Riot Girls. Fast chicks on roller skates, body checking in fishnet stockings. What’s not to like? These gals are so popular that some of their events sell out, so arrive early.
Vancouver Leather
Vancouver has a fairly vibrant SM community that hosts regular parties and workshops. This site gives you the 411 on all things dyke and leather in the city, including links to other local lesbian SM groups.
