Girlports FAQ

Your questions answered!

Hopefully here you'll find the answers to any question you may have! If you're still needing some help, click here to contact us, and we'll be happy to answer any questions or concerns regarding the site, its features and/or its content.

How do you choose what listings to include?

Generally speaking we’re looking for events/places/organizations etc. that either cater to a lesbian/bisexual women clientele or have a regular lesbian/bisexual women clientele. For example, there may be a restaurant somewhere that has male owners and only men work there, but fifty percent of their clientele is lesbian (I know that sounds insane and impossible, but hey, this is just a hypothetical example!) We’d list it because it’s a popular lesbian spot, but we’ll also try to let you know that there are only men who work there.

Where do you get all of your information?

From many, many sources including on-site visits, from individuals or community leaders who live in the destination, local LGBT publications or websites, visitors to Girlports, business owners, organization leaders and anywhere else we can get the information needed to keep our listings up-to-date.

How often do you update your listings?

We are constantly updating. If you visit our homepage you’ll see all of our latest updates. We also indicate new listings in all of our cities. This is the beauty of a website as compared to a printed guide. If we learn a bar is closed, we change it immediately so you know it immediately. Also, if you want to receive automatic updates for particular cities, you can do that by subscribing to our RSS feed, which can be found at the bottom of every page, so you’re always in the loop.

How much does it cost to be listed on your site?

Absolutely nothing. All listings are posted free of charge as a service to you, the user. However, businesses and groups can pay a small monthly fee to have their listing enhanced (with supplementary contact information, logos etc. This does not change the description of their listing). If you’re a business-owner who would like to find out about enhancing your listing, click here to get in touch with us.

I own/work at or know of a business I think should be on Girlports. How can this happen?

We are always looking for new listings as we like to keep as up-to-date as possible. Please visit our contact page here, and fill out the online form. However, just the fact that you send this to us doesn’t mean it will automatically be listed. We’ll have to check it out, do a bit of research and make sure it fits in with the Girlports listing philosophy.

I’d like to find out more about advertising on Girlports.

And we’d like to find out more about you! This one’s easy. You can either email us at or call us at 1 514 436-6327 and we’d be happy to tell you more about advertising and sponsorship opportunities on Girlports.

I left a comment for a listing, but I don’t see it up there. Why not?

At this moment in time, all of our comments are moderated. What that means is somebody reads through them first just to make sure the content is appropriate. We’re all for constructive criticism here at Girlports, but anything that sounds homophobic, racist or just plain mean won’t make it through the vetting process. We value your opinions, but we just have to make sure they won’t offend any of our other users. As well, the Girlports comments section is meant to offer helpful information, not be a place for companies to advertise, so those kinds of comments won't be accepted either.  If you own a company that should be on Girlports, we'll include it in our regular listings.  Generally speaking though, most comments should be up anywhere from 48-72 hours (if not sooner) after you leave them.

What is a Passport and how does it work?

The Passport is an amazing travel tool that we here at Girlports have created just for you! This vacation planner allows you to create a list of the places you want to go to and the things you want to see in the cities on our site. We provide you with addresses and maps to help navigate your way through these destinations. You can print your Passport or send it to yourself via email. To use your Passport, simply register using your email address, and start adding listings by clicking on ADD TO MY PASSPORT. It's simple, free and very easy to use.

You have a place listed and when I got there it didn’t exist anymore. What happened?

Yes, I’m sad to say, it is possible that something may slip between the cracks. We do our best to stay as up-to-date as possible, but bars and restaurants often close without notice and until somebody tells us about it, or publishes it in the local LGBT media, we don’t know about it. That’s why we ask people to leave comments about listings that are on Girlports. If you know a place has closed, please tell us in the comments section of that particular listing and we’ll take it off the site. This two minute effort on your part will be an immense help to other women who are also planning their vacations. That’s also why we ask our users to double-check these things before going to a particular spot.

There was a good description of a hotel/bar/restaurant on Girlports, but when I got there it was totally a waste of time. I was unhappy with the service/environment/room. How could you even suggest such a place?

If you had an unpleasant experience, we’re sorry about that. Unfortunately though, places change from one day to the next. Some people have a great experience, others have a terrible one. Perhaps things have gone downhill in recent months, it’s hard for us to say. That is why we ask users to leave comments about the listings they’ve visited and we also encourage you to read the comments of others. We’re giving you the options of what is available for you as a lesbian or a bisexual woman, but these are only suggestions. We always encourage users to do some extra research on their own to make sure their vacation is as top-notch as possible. That said, if we see that a location is getting constant critiques in our comments section, we’ll absolutely update our description to make that more obvious.

How do I make a make a phone call from the telephone number you provided in the listing?

All the phone numbers provided in all the listings are indicated exactly as how you would compose them if you are in the city itself. To make international calls from your calling area, we suggest you contact your local calling service provider. You can also try using this handy website for international dialling codes: www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/dialing.html.

In the Worldwide event listings, what does the (TBA) mean in the date field?

(TBA) stands for To Be Announced. Where ever possible, we always try to include accurate dates. Sometimes though, event dates haven't yet been determined or announced, hence the (TBA) abbreviation.

Why are there no maps for Bangkok, Cape Town, and Seoul?

To make finding your selected listings as easy as possible, we have chosen to use the Google Map API. Although it is the most complete and robust mapping application out there, it unfortunately doesn't have maps yet for Bangkok, Cape Town, or Seoul. As soon as it does, you can be sure it will be available on our site.
